2024 Elections Called

The President of the Galician Government (Xunta de Galicia), Alfonso Rueda, has called today elections for the Galician Parliament on February the 18th, 2024.

El objetivo es, según destacó, hacer que “Galicia siga siendo como es”, una comunidad “referente en la mayoría de las cosas importantes” y un modelo de fiabilidad, estabilidad y credibilidad.

Análisis

Elections will take place in the middle of the Carnival, a time specially busy for people living in Ourense. The electoral advance contradicts the message promoted by the President towards finishing the legislature. This could suggest a negative effect for the incumbent candidate. However, the possible negative impact of this news is mitigated by the media control mechanism, capable to present the news in terms of democratic normality. Timing is also favorable to the candidate, because news arrive in the middle of the holiday period, attenuating the possible generated attention. There is also no surprise effect capable of significantly increasing the attention of the electorate, because the issue of the call is already part of the media agenda. The limited media management capacity of the opposition parties, both at the Galician and state level, will prevent them from generating a significant negative impact derived from the contradiction between the speech maintained by the government candidate and his decision.
