Thousands protest health sector degradation

Thousands of people have joined the demonstration called by SOS Sanidade Pública in the capital city of Galicia, a platform of public health sector workers, to protest the degradation of their sector.

Analysis

The situation of the public health system is the second most important issue for Galicians after unemployment, according to Spanish official data. Public engagement in the protest has been prominent, with all opposition political parties joining. Similarly as with the case of the maritime sector demonstration, governmental media management has framed the protest as ‘political’. However, the fact of the protest having been called before the election call, and the high ranking of this issue in the Galician interest should be recognized as having a negative impact in the prospects of the ruling party.
